FREJUS
– SAINT RAPHAËL 126
A little of History
The previous history of the city would go back up to the time of
Oxybiens (Celtic Ligurian people) and in Greek of Massalia.
However, Caïus Julius Caesar builds the city under the name
of Forum Jolii. In the time of Octave (Auguste Forum Jolii) became
a powerful naval base.
Numerous vestiges in good condition of conservation are visible
nowadays.
In 5 ° century Fréjus became a bishop's palace.
Fréjus was partially destroyed during Big Invasion then
by the Saracens, but during all the Middle Age his Ro-man port kept
all its activity.
Its history was the one of Provence (realm of Provence, Counts
of Catalonia, Angevins Counts, and realm of France in 1481)
It undergoes the wars of kings of France (occupation of Provence
by Charles Le Quint e.i.).
Under the revolution and the empire, Bonaparte accosts to Fréjus
in his return of Egypt and Napoleon embarks to Fréjus for
Elba.
In 1944 the allies land not far from Fréjus to free France
In 1959, the break of the dam of Malpasset destroyed a part of
the city and few Roman vestiges making numer-ous victims.
Fréjus was a centre importing colonial troops.
In 21st century, Fréjus remains the Roman City to be visited
and his city sister Saint Raphaël offers to the tourists all
the infrastructures of a high-level sea resort.
